How Are Sacred Scriptures, Wisdom Traditions And Ethics of the World Linked?
    Dr Muhammad Maroof Shah

How are sacred scriptures, wisdom traditions and ethics linked? How many books and commentaries on sacred texts should be read for right knowledge? What is the right path? Can’t we state it in clear terms and stop wrangling over niceties of doctrine? How to know the most important kernel of the Quran and Sunnah or of other traditions? Iqbal says that “Qalandar Juz Do Harfi La Illa Kuch Nahi Rakhta/Tu Qaroon Huwa Hae Lugat Haayi Hijazi Ka.” The Kalima of Islam, like Upanisadic Great sayings (Mahvakyas) is simple and short....

An Apology to Muslims for President Trump, Travel Ban Should Humiliate Us, Not You
    Nicholas Kristof

Whenever an extremist in the Muslim world does something crazy, people demand that moderate Muslims step forward to condemn the extremism. Attack on Sufi Shrine in Balochistan: An Honest Introspection on the Islamists’ Cultural War in the Sub-Continent Required
Ghulam Rasool Dehlvi, New Age Islam

This is a trying time for all the Sufi practitioners and shrine-visitors in India and Pakistan. First time in the history, Ajmer Sharif--the biggest Sufi shrine in India--is being used in a large political campaign of the Jami'at Ulema-e-Hind (JUH), whose key members and religio-politicians declare Sufism "un-Islamic", yet chose the largest Sufi shrine to organise their 33th annual conference, clearly in an attempt to woo the mainstream Sufi-oriented Muslims in India….

Suffice it to say that Quran calls for conservation of animal life and therefore has nominated a long period in which hunting is prohibited so as to give animals time to recover from the depletion of its population at the hands of mankind. Zakir Naik’s Open Letter: Democrat or an Islamo-Fascist Demagogue?
    Arshad Alam, New Age Islam

If one is hell bent on arguing that Islam is the best religion in the world and that polytheism of the Hindus is a backward and deplorable religious worldview, then how does this promote peace and tolerance? If he continues to justify that Islam alone is the saviour of world, then how does this promote peace and mutual respect? Calling such sermons of a third rate pedant as dialogue militates against the very idea of a dialogical plural world. Zakir Naik is not interested in dialogue: he is a fascist demagogue who wants all the world to convert to his point of view.

His hypocrisy on democracy begins to unravel the minute he takes recourse to the Quran. There are many passages within the text to cite in terms of pluralism and tolerance. But to quote the verse which tells Muslims to be patient and wait for their eventual victory over the polytheists is perhaps too much. This is not a man who is a believer in the virtues of secular laws like democracy. This is a man who wants to unfurl the Islamic flag everywhere, demean and trounce all other religious traditions. The recourse to democracy and the language of rights are only a means to an end: that of establishing the supremacy of Islam. ....

The Fight for Muslim Women’s Rights: Toward a Scriptural Hermeneutic of Islamic Feminism
Dr. Adis Duderija, New Age Islam

A Salafi worldview/epistemology is based on a hermeneutical mechanism central classical Islamic law which at least, in theory, a  priori privileges the interpretive efforts of the early Muslim communities (especially the distinguished Companions and the Successors) over all others. When combined with the other mechanisms explained above a Salafi worldview/epistemology implies a subscription to an epistemologically pre-modern episteme that lacks internal hermeneutical mechanisms to incorporate ethical values and system of ethics that were not prevalent at the time of the formative and classical periods of Islamic thought into its ethical and legal canon....

This is a tough time for introspection on part of the Indian Ulema and Islamic scholars. Merely organising large anti-terrorism conferences will do no service to the community. Time they combat the exclusivist, xenophobic, misogynistic and anti-plural religious underpinnings, be they embedded in Salafism, the Saudi state religion, or any other strain of Islam. Countrywide hue and cry is still being heard from the self-imposed Muslim representatives championing the cause of Tahaffuz-e-Shariat (protection of Shariah).  “Islam is under attack” is their daily sloganeering in India. Arshad Alam, New Age Islam

The second observation of the Court was that they wanted to know if segregation was an essential feature of the Islamic faith. It is a matter of great shame that the Dargah trustees went at length to prove that it was essential to the Islamic faith. Marshalling passages from the Quran and Hadees, they went at great lengths to show how Islam indeed was a backward, regressive religion which limited the movement of women. The Court however was not convinced and could not find any merit in the argument that allowing women to pray at the Dargah will fundamentally alter the faith of Islam....

With Our 7th Century Mind-Set, Can We Muslims Co-Exist With Other Religious Communities In Any Part Of The World?
Sultan Shahin, Founding Editor, New Age Islam

The Holy Quran had asked Muslims to fight for the existence of all those worship houses, synagogues, churches, monasteries, temples where God is praised in abundance.

“…If God had not checked one set of people by means of another, there would surely have been pulled down monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques, in which the name of Allah is commemorated in abundant measure. Allah will certainly aid those who aid his (cause); —for verily Allah is full of Strength, Exalted in Might, (able to enforce His Will). (Qur'an, 22:40)

You can see that here God makes the cause of protecting worship houses of all religious communities, “monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques,” as His own cause. But have you heard any Muslim demanding Saudi Arabia or Pakistan or Bangladesh or any other Muslim country where religious minorities face persecution, to desist and follow the dictates of the Quran for religious freedom and diversity? I would have thought that if Muslims followed Quran, not to speak of the charter of The United Nations’ Universal Declaration of Human Rights, we would be fighting Jihad against Saudi government to allow other religious communities to establish their own worship houses, against Pakistan and Bangladesh to stop persecuting Hindus, Christians and Ahmadis, etc.

Islamo-Fascism and Islam-Supremacism Feeding Islamophobia Worldwide: Sultan Shahin Tells UNHRC
Sultan Shahin, Editor, New Age Islam

Madame President,... But xenophobia, particularly in the form of Islamophobia, is growing in several European countries and partly feeds upon the flagrant violation of the human rights of religious minorities in several Muslim-majority countries. Petrodollar Islam has injected the poison of Islam-supremacism in Muslim societies worldwide.  Even exemplary moderate countries like Indonesia, Malaysia are now infected with this virus. But the worst case scenario is evolving in the only Muslim nuclear power, Pakistan. Jihadi vigilantes including members of security forces are hunting down and killing all those who oppose their version of Islam. The country is drowning in a sea of violence but civil society, media or elected parliamentarians dare not condemn the wanton killings in the name of Islam. -- Sultan Shahin, Editor, New Age Islam, addressing the United Nations Human Rights Council’s 16th session in Geneva on 22 March 2011 in the General Debate on Follow-up and implementation of the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action.

An Appeal to Sufi Divines: Please Go Beyond Clichés Like Islam Is a Religion of Peace, Refute the Generally Accepted Core Theology Which Is Helping Jihadis Lure Our Youths to Terrorism
Sultan Shahin, Founding Editor, New Age Islam

Respected Sufi divines, I would, therefore, earnestly appeal to you to use the opportunity provided by the Delhi conclave to go beyond the usual shibboleths. Sufi approach of focussing on the positive features of Islam worked well at one time. There was no internet then. In the internet age everyone is a scholar. In this age of instant scholarship, nothing can be hidden or bypassed.

It must be understood, that the radical Islamist theology and the current Islamic theology of consensus are by and large one and the same. Any differences are cosmetic. ISIS may vanish tomorrow. But the problem of radicalisation will remain. Islam supremacism, xenophobia, intolerance and exclusivism are inherent in the current Islamic, and not just Islamist theology.

Focusing on positive features of Islam is an essential part of De-radicalisation or, more realistically, Preventing Radicalisation. But it is not bearing fruit in full measure as the core theology agreed to by nearly all Muslims militates against these positives. As briefly outlined above, this core and consensual theology nullifies the impact of all arguments made against violent extremism. It is this core theology that needs to be refuted and changed.  Let us all try and bring the core Islamic theology in line with the actual teachings of Quran and Sunnah. Let us move away from the current theology of violence and xenophobia. Let us move towards a coherent, comprehensive theology of peace and pluralism, co-existence and gender justice.

    Islamic Sharia Laws

Reform India's Muslim Personal Law, Breach the Stagnation in Muslim Religious Thought, Use the Opportunity to Work out A New Islamic Theology of Peace, Pluralism and Gender Equality
Sultan Shahin, Editor, New Age Islam

It is for the government of India to take a call in the matter. Why should Indian Muslim women not deserve the protection of Islam provided to their counterparts in Pakistan, Bangladesh and elsewhere, practically in the entire Islamic world, except Saudi Arabia. ... Why should Indian Muslims suffer the indignities imposed by the British in our land under an Anglo-Mohammedan law? ...

A debate kick-started by Personal Law reforms may then provide us an opportunity to take the issue of theological reforms to other areas too, which are far more important to the community and our religion. Personal Law debate would bring out the obscurantism of our ulema to the fore. It would bring out their lack of concern for Islam or Muslims.

We have to virtually create, find acceptance for and popularise a new Islamic theology of peace, coexistence, inclusiveness, pluralism and gender equality.

The stagnation, total lack of any theological debate, in the Muslim community, just has to be breached and broken. The stagnation suits the Islamist extremists who have a very coherent, well-designed, well-thought-out theology of violence and exclusivism, hatred and intolerance, as well as gender inequality and discrimination.

If Islam Means Peace, Why Is Much Of Its Theology Soaked In Hatred, Humiliation, Offensive War?
    Sultan Shahin, New Age Islam

Among many factors, social, economic, political, psychological, the one common feature is a brainwashing of vulnerable people on the basis of a supremacist, xenophobic, intolerant, exclusivist and totalitarian Jihadi theology. This is a blatant misuse of Islam, a spiritual path to salvation, that 1.6 billion Muslims believe, teaches peace, pluralism, co-existence and good neighbourliness.

But there has to be a reason why jihadi ideology has gained acceptance so quickly; why fatwas issued by reputed moderate scholars prove so ineffective? How are Jihadis able to create a 100 percent certainty in the minds of some Muslims that violence against innocent people, including Muslims, whom they consider infidel, will please God and lead them to heaven?

Clearly we Muslims need to rethink some basic features of our theology. Success of jihadism lies in the fact that, at its core, the jihadi theology is not very different from the consensus theology of all other schools of Islamic thought. For instance, jihadists are able to misuse the intolerant, xenophobic, war-time verses of the holy Quran, as Muslims believe that all verses, regardless of the context, are of universal applicability. Indeed, the Islamic theology of consensus, taught in all madrasas, says that Quran is uncreated, meaning that it is just an aspect of God; and so, divine like God Himself.....
